In this Vivo IPL 2016 (IPL 9), Maharashtra was home to three venues: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune and Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. Due to the prevailing acute drought situations in the State of Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court demanded the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to shift the matches slated to be played in May 2016 from the state to some other place.

On April 29, 2016, the Indian Premier League Governing Council announced that Vizag will be the neutral venue for Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants home matches after May 1, 2016 for the 2016 VIVO IPL season.

Both the IPL franchises have expressed satisfaction and are keen to embrace Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Pothinamallayya Palem, Visakhapatnam,  in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh as their home ground for the upcoming matches.
