The petition submitted on Friday November 9, 2012 from the State of Texas requests the Obama administration to “Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.”
The petition appeared in the White House website “We the People” that invites users with a U.S. zip code to submit or sign petitions about policy changes they would like to see with the condition that such a petition must reach 25,000 signatures within 30 days, by December 9th, 2012, for the Obama administration to comment on it.
Surprisingly, today at 3:22 p.m., the number of signatures zoomed past the needed 25,000 mark.
When I last checked the page on the White House website “We the People” at 11:00 pm the total signatures on the petition was 50,885.

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.
The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it’s citizens’ standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

So far, the president has not commented on the petition and there is no guarantee that he will. The terms of participation give the president some loopholes.
“To avoid the appearance of improper influence, the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government in its response to a petition,” the site says.
At least, 19 other states have submitted similar petitions requesting secession on the “We the People” forum, including Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

I suspect that not a single petitioner in any of the states has taken into account all the federal lands and federal buildings in those states, and I suspect that the federal government isn’t just going to say, “Oh, yes, you can leave. And please take all of our federal buildings and federal lands with you.” Personally I think it would be funny if the federal government said to Texas, “Yes, as soon as you come up with $10 trillion for all of the federal buildings, federal lands, national forests, national parks, national monuments, military bases, and mineral and oil rights on our federal lands in Texas, we’ll be happy to let you go. Just don’t come to the United States for help when fires roar through Texas, or hurricanes and tornadoes devastate the state. Bye bye now!”

All the federal assets are being paid by all the people from the present United States of America. So they should get their money back. As by every divorce this splitting of the states would bring in a battle about the goods. Not only there shall be involved a lot of money to be paid for the federal buildings, national parks and grounds, they shall have to face the problems of the funds for schools, libraries and public institutions.
Russel rightly see the dangers of the division of minerals and natural elements as a difficulty not so easy to overcome. Certain states shall get a lot of power over other states because of what they can deliver with minerals and the black gold (oil).
On the other hand how shall they all cope when disasters come over them? Shall they count on their ‘divorced partner’?

The US has been corrupted and heading in a down word spiral since the 90’s. If all 20 of the state leave and rejoin together as a new nation they would become a strong nation a lot of resources and military bases are located in these states. NORAD is in colorado and it is a supper bunker. Plus then to get supplies from the west coast to the east and vis versa you would have to go through the new nation. In addition the new nation would have control over the gulf of mexico.

The only problem with your thinking is that the federal government isn’t going to just give away the federal lands, national forests, national parks, national monuments, military bases, etc., in those states.
The other thing is that all 50 states now have secession petitions going. So if all 50 states seceded and rejoined together as a new nation they would be, uh, the United States………lol

Copperfield, do you think those divided states would be able to come together to form one new union again. When they are not able to come to a consensus now they shall not be able to come to one after they had split. Remember the 16th century split of Europe, which took four centuries to come back to a new united Europe, on which they are still working on and are being confronted with several difficulties to keeping it together.

When after so many years, already having the allowance of differences between the states, today can not find a way to come to solidarity with the citizens of their own state nor with those inhabitants of the many states, how shall they be able after a split to be willing to take care of the poor states or states in trouble?

@tvaraj – That’s the beauty of a TRUE democracy. WE the people have the right to voice our opinions openly, without fear of judgement, discrimination, or censor.
YES – The states will not do good on their own. But the site lets their voice be heard and the authorities to take corrective action.
It lets people like – YOU and ME to know that there was a voice like this doing rounds. Isn’t that a boon we have taken for granted? When that happens, people speak!

When at other places, like the European Union, they are trying to make one strong unit, you shall always find people who prefer their own sovereignty more important than a “working together” spirit.
By splitting the United States they shall find themselves made weaker and in a less advantageous position do deal on the economic market.
